What a ride we've lived through....Perspectives...

My older daughter is 40 years younger than me...almost to the day. She started college in 2004..I started back in 1964. I remember leaving her at her dorm and in a moment of reminisence, wondering if she could ever imagine what America must have been like 40 years previously...and using that time frame projecting back 40 years from 1924...Lindburgh hadn't even thought about flying across the Atlantic...

Could any of us have imagined using
devices such as emails...?? ipods....?? pda's....???...COMPUTERS....????

I was almost 19 before my first airplane many of us flew for the first time at an earlier age...?? [not counting free flights to God knows where for all of us people out there with American flags next to profile names]

We read or hear stories of teenagers or very young adults getting killed for doing some really stupid things....there are several entries in my PHS yearbook talking about how exciting it was one evening to be with me in my family's 1961 Oldsmobile 98 streaming down Route 17 from Mahwah at 100 mph -totally sober and drug free -just to see if I could get that car to move that fast.

Good God.....Someone in our class is a GREAT GRANDPARENT...????????

Meeting Dave West on on board a destroyer in Newport, Rhode Island while we were both in the Navy.

Meeting Andy Dunn in Seoul, Korea while he was assigned to the Army Hospital there as a Dental Technician and I was a member the US Navy Advisory to the Korean Navy. He did an excellent job providing me with a first class teeth cleaning.

45 years in one navy-grad and law school-lawyer-banker-lawyer-living in NYC-San Francisco-NYC-married-divorced two great the next 6250 characters for 50th...

School Story:

Yup.....I was responsible for tying up hall traffic looking for my "contacts".

Starting a driver's ed on the road class on a late November Friday afternoon and never getting out of the parking lot...Like Michele See, I ran back into the school and ran down to the school office and blurted out the news to Mr. McDonough. He threatened to expel me on the spot. I literally shouted at him, "Put on the radio"!

October 1962..lunch in the cafeteria...low flying plane and kids started screaming.

Mr. Lanzalotta in geography class describing the difference between loess and chernozen ...

My total non-appreciation of the dedication and musical talent of Mr. Frank Reyerson in the band room. Playing three instruments - ok, not simultaneously - in Mr. Reyerson's
Big Band Sound specialty group - playing Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" on tenor sax.

Miss Behr teaching biology.....many earthworms and frogs died for a good cause...

Mr. Nardelli in physics describing "impetus"...

Kevin Sabella and I doing a skit from "Mr. Roberts" in Mr. Sanzari's English class and being gently admonished for using the word "bastard".....

"Coach" John V. DeGasperis, 86, died on Feb. 16.

John grew up in Cliffside Park, went to St. Cecelia High School in Englewood and was captain of the football team under Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi and also went on to be the captain of the football team at University of Delaware. Many people remember John as an amazing football coach and teacher at Paramus High School. For over 35 years, John brought his coaching values to his team, positively influencing many young people throughout the years. His students at Paramus High School were always treated like his own children, and he held his football players close to his heart. His colleagues held him in high esteem and remained dear life-long friends.

Everyone that had the privilege of knowing John knew that God, Family & Country were his priorities, and he passed those ideals along to his children. His welcoming nature, explosive smile and unconditional love for his children, grandchildren, all family and friends were apparent in all that he did. John's sparkle when he looked at his wife, Anne, his crazy love for children, and his amazing sense of humor never left him.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Anne DeGasperis, his six children; Bill, John, Judy, Donna Jean, Tom, Mike, and their families; nineteen grandchildren and three great-grandsons. His brothers, sister, and brother and sister-in laws were his best friends, and he always had a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews, and called all those he loved, "Darling" and "Pal."

A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 256 Azalea Drive, New Milford

John, another comrade of Miss Altman's fourth grade class at Memorial. He went out of his way to be friendly when I arrived in Paramus midway through the year.

We lost touch for years until I started work at a NYC law firm and discovered John as the firm's comptroller.
He hadn't changed at all and it was a pleasure to renew our friendship.

Ellen and I grew up across the street from each other on Clinton Road. We knew each other since fourth grade.

Ellen was forever upbeat and smiling. She never had anything but good words to say about anyone. We last chatted last year at our "Delford Park" reunion when the "second generation" of that "Development" centered around Clinton Road, children who all arrived in Paramus with our parents around 1956, held a get together to celebrate our friendship of over 50 years. We all knew how ill Ellen was at the time but she was there lending her smile and good wishes to all.

We were all neighbors, all moving from New York to Paramus at about the same time. We all became an extended "family" always looking out for each other and our doors were always open. Ellen was a major part of that family. I will sorely miss her.

Her funeral will be this Sunday, February 1 at the Robert Schoem Chapel on Route 4 in Paramus.
